Football & Rugby
The continued development of 3rd Generation long pile sand and rubber filled synthetic grass, produces systems which replicate natural turf pitches.
Third Generation (3G) Artificial Grass Systems
The latest generation of artificial football and rugby pitches offer improved durability, allowing even greater hours of play with the added advantages of improved comfort and safety. All these factors can offer sports venues and facilities a higher revenue stream.

Fibrillated 3G Systems
Fibrillated 3G systems use fibres that are manufcatured with a wide single tape extruded fibre which is slit perforated to produce the fibrillated finish. This gives the surface a multi pile appearance and helps to encapsulate the rubber infill. The pile heights of this type of surface are normally between 50-65mm and can be installed directly onto a stone or porous macadam foundation. However, with the addition of a shock pad layer, the performance and player comfort will be further improved and maintained.

Monofilament 3G Systems
Monofilament 3G systems use fibres that are individually extruded with each fibre wound together to form the fillaments. This manufacturing process produces fibres that are very durable, provide excellent aesthetics and playing characteristics. The pile height of monofilament 3G surfaces normally ranges between 40-65mm and can be installed directly onto a stone or macadam foundation. However, with the addition of a shock pad layer, the performance and player comfort will be further improved and maintained.

The original ‘Astro Turf’ type surfaces had a reputation for being hard – both in terms of ball bounce and the toll it took on players (especially in terms of grazed legs). 3rd Generation systems are manufactured with softer less abrasive fibrillated or monofilament synthetic grass fibres. These fibres are in-filled with a mixture of rounded silica sand and finely graded rubber particles which replicate the root zone of a natural grass pitch. 3G surfaces are ideally suited for Soccer and Rugby, particularly when players wear studded boots. 3rd generation systems have changed attitudes to the way artificial surfaces are regarded by the relevant governing bodies.
Rugby Surface

The improved qualities of 3rd Generation systems have been recognised and accepted at the highest level by the international governing bodies such as the RFU, IRB, FA, UEFA and FIFA.
AstroSport offer a range of 3rd generation systems manufactured with fibrillated and monofilament fibres and to suit all levels of soccer and rugby. There are numerous systems to choose from depending on whether a community use facility is required through to the latest FIFA 2* recommended systems.
Before considering which level of performance you are considering from a 3rd generation system, bear in mind that FIFA 2* recommended systems have to pass rigorous performance tests and are designed specifically to provide the playing characteristics for professional football. Astrosport can provide the best advise possible for your needs.

The project at Nene Park Academy, Peterborough involved the supply and installation of a rubberised in-situ laid shock pad and a 40mm 3rd Generation sand filled rubber filled synthetic grass soccer surface manufactured by Lano Sports.
