Hockey Pitches
Hockey is no longer accepted on natural grass and this has meant that synthetic grass surfaces for hockey are the most widely available. As a result of this hockey has become a more skillful game with increased participation.AstroSport can offer a diverse range of synthetic grass surfaces for hockey.
The types of suface suitable for hockey are as follows:
Sand Filled
Tufted construction with straight fibres and into various types of backing materials. This type of surface is available in pile heights from 18 to 25mm. When the complete pile of the fabric is fully supported by the sand filling. Sand filled synthetic grass is suitable for hockey as well as multi sport activities where a wider range of sports are to be played. Sand Filled synthetic grass can be installed directly onto macadam. If a degree of resilience is required for hockey, a rubberised shock pad should be installed beneath the sand filled surface.
Sand Dressed
A denser tufted or woven construction and often manufactured with curled fibres known as Knit-de-knit (kdk) A fine dressing of sand is top dressed into the fibres to support the base of the pile. The completed surfaces provides a greener more dense appearance and is ideal for high level hockey. Other sports are allowed on sand dressed surfaces such as tennis and soccer training. To optimise the performance of sand dressed surfaces, a rubberised shock pad installed beneath is recommended.
Fully Synthetic
Often called "water-based", It is a very dense surface tufted, woven or knitted construction. The synthetic fibres require no infill as they are self supporting and often non directional. These surfaces require wetting, hence the name "water-based", often via prolonged showering with pitch-side water cannons prior to their use and occasionally during half-time intervals depending on the prevailing atmospherics. Fully synthetic surfaces are favoured for top level hockey use since they offer more protection for players by minimising the abrasive effect created by the sand infill. Fully synthetic grass form the majority of the elite level field hockey pitches in use today.
AstroSport can provide the best advice on the type of surface that will best suit you and your hockey players.
